Learn how to pair, use, and troubleshoot your Koss BT221i Bluetooth headphones with this step-by-step setup guide. Includes charging tips and call control instructions.

Quick answer

To set up your Koss BT221i Bluetooth headphones, charge them fully via USB-C, then press and hold the power button until the LED flashes to enter pairing mode. Select 'Koss BT221i' from your device's Bluetooth list.

Before you start

The Koss BT221i uses Bluetooth 5.0 for a stable connection up to 30 feet. Make sure your phone, tablet, or computer supports Bluetooth audio. The headphones are not compatible with older Bluetooth 2.0 devices without A2DP profile support.

A full charge takes about 2 hours via USB-C and provides over 18 hours of playback. The battery is built-in and rechargeable, so you don't need to buy separate batteries.

BT221i setup steps

  1. 1. Charge the headphones: Connect the included USB-C cable to the headphones and a USB power source. The LED indicator turns red while charging and goes off when fully charged. A full charge takes about 2 hours. If the headphones won't power on, they may be completely drained. Charge for at least 15 minutes before trying again.
  2. 2. Enter pairing mode: Press and hold the power button (located on the left earpiece) for about 3 seconds until the LED starts flashing blue and red alternately. This indicates the headphones are discoverable. If the LED doesn't flash, the headphones may already be paired to a previous device. Turn Bluetooth off on that device first, or reset the headphones by holding the power button for 10 seconds.
  3. 3. Pair with your device: On your phone, tablet, or computer, open the Bluetooth settings and scan for new devices. Select 'Koss BT221i' from the list. If prompted, enter the PIN '0000' or '1234' – these are the default codes. If 'Koss BT221i' doesn't appear, make sure the headphones are in pairing mode (LED flashing) and within 3 feet of your device. Move away from other wireless devices that may cause interference.
  4. 4. Test audio and controls: Play music or a call. Use the in-line remote: press the middle button to play/pause, the + and – buttons for volume, and the phone icon to answer or end a call. The microphone is on the same module. If the remote buttons don't work, your device may not support all AVRCP commands. Try a different music app or update your device's Bluetooth driver.
  5. 5. Recharge and store: When the battery is low, the LED flashes red. Recharge via USB-C. For long-term storage, charge the headphones to about 50% and store them in a cool, dry place. Avoid leaving them on the charger after full charge. If you won't use them for a month, charge them to 50% and turn them off. A completely dead battery left for months may become unable to hold a charge.
